Birthday dress!

Hello!

I’m just popping by with some (fuzzy iphone) pictures of my birthday dress from yesterday!

I made this is in a major hurry as decided I wanted to wear a new homemade dress for my birthday on Saturday evening knowing full well I only had a few hours free before my bday on Monday and man did I make mistakes! I don’t want to dwell on them too much but lets just say don’t look to closely at the left sleeve (where I decided to overlock the seam without checking that the actual sleeve had bunched up in there too and I was just cutting a hole in it!!) or the back where the skirt joining to the bodice is not even on both sides at all!)

I used the skater dress pattern by Simple Sew from another Love Sewing magazine I picked up at the Knitting & Stitching show and half way through decided to cut the sleeves down to be short as the cotton fabric I was using made it too restrictive to be long sleeved.

My birthday itself was amazing it started with a handful of beautiful cards including this homemade pop up one from my amazing fiance, who also secretly tweeted all the sewing bee lot to ask them to wish me happy birthday- which I happy to report they did… it was an unexpected highlight for me, getting tweets from Tilly, Matt, Deborah, Alex and Neil!! 😉

We went to HARRY POTTER WORLD and I’m not a bit ashamed to say this was my top choice of where to go for my birthday – it really was amazing!! Loved every second- truly worth the money and very inspiring! Then we joined my lovely family for a surprise chocolate cake and onto my favourite steak restaurant for a slap up meal… absolutely perfect!

FABRIC : Light weight cotton from the remnants pile at £6 for over 2.5m at Rolls and Rems, Finsbury Park
PATTERN : Skater Dress by Simple Sew (free with issue 8 of Love Sewing Magazine)
TIME TAKEN : 2.5 hours
COMMENTS/ IDEAS FOR NEXT TIME : DON’T RUSH GABBY! I would like to try this in a softer more flexible material and lengthen the arms.

Today I started my new job – we’re doing a training week and everyone there is lovely so… so far so good! It’s so strange having my first ‘proper job’ in 6 years and I’m about 10 years older than most people there but needs must!

What are you lot up to?

Love and lots of luck,

  1. So Summer in the dark, good choice of fabric… and Happy Birthday to you Dear Gabby. We had not time to visit Harry Potter’s world in my last trip in London… A perfect gift for your birthday …

  2. Sounds like an awesome birthday all round! I totally know the feeling of that last-minute rush to make a special occasion dress, I usually go out with no hems! You are also making Rolls & Rems sound very appealing, I might have to take a detour there if I ever make space in my stash!!
